In the latest podcast of AfriGenetry Link’s 50 Days DNA Health & Wellness Challenge, Dr. Annerin Maxwell explains why Genetic Disease Awareness is important in taking charge of your health.

Genetic disease awareness is about understanding how inherited conditions affect individuals, families, and communities and using that knowledge to make informed health decisions.

Many genetic diseases, such as sickle cell, hypertension, Diabetes, and certain inherited cancers, are passed down through families. Some appear at birth, while others develop later in life. In many cases, people may carry a gene mutation without showing symptoms, unknowingly passing it on to the next generation.

This is why awareness is powerful.

Genetic disease awareness encourages:

  • Early screening and testing

  • Family history discussions

  • Premarital genotype checks

  • Genetic counseling

  • Informed reproductive choices

  • Early medical intervention

When communities prioritize awareness, fewer children are born with preventable inherited conditions, and families are better prepared to manage health risks.
